The Swedish School in San Diego is a non-profit organization that was founded by a group of enthusiastic parents in 1999. They had found a flyer about a Swedish School in Orange County at a Christmas fair and got the idea to start their own school in San Diego.
Today the school has more than 100 students from 1–12 years old. The education is held once a week at three different locations in San Diego County. The school accepts students from families where at least one parent is a Swedish citizen and in which Swedish is spoken at home. The school does not teach Swedish as a foreign language to beginner students, but aims to stimulate and expand the knowledge of the language that the students already know.
Junibacken (9 month – approx. 3 years)
In these hour-long classes the parent participates with the child. We sing, rhyme and play together. Our main subjects are animals and colors.
Bullerbyn (approx. 3 years – 5 years)
Now the children participate by themselves in two hour-long classes. We are working with numbers, letters, colors, shapes and other subjects to enhance the children’s vocabulary. We also do a lot of singing, dancing and various traditional games.
Saltkråkan (5 years and older)
These classes are for school-aged children. The students learn how to read, write and communicate in Swedish. They also get a chance to learn about Swedish culture, geography, science and history. Singing, dancing and playing are still a part of the lesson plans.
Many of the traditions that started with the school in 1999 are still a very big part of the traditions we have today, thanks to a lot of dedicated parents. We have also made room for new traditions as the school continues to grow each year. These traditions are very important for the school’s community. Therefore, the Swedish School in San Diego offers traditional celebrations and games every year to our members, for example:
…fall games with brännboll (Swedish game similar to baseball).
...participation in the Christmas fair “December Nights” in Balboa Park.
...Christmas party with Swedish food.
...End of semester celebration with Lucia performance (fall semester).
...Easter celebration with games, egg hunt and egg painting.
...End of the year celebration on Sweden’s National holiday (June 6) in Balboa Park.
